Hiveforge: The Hazel Problem

The first public prototype in an ongoing development series exploring creativity, simulation, and the fantasy of being a coding god.

Hiveforge is a collection of small prototypes that explore ideas for a creative coding-simulation game still in development.
I’m a solo developer experimenting with ways to make programming feel expressive and strategic. I have set out to find out what kinds of systems can let players design and simulate their own worlds through easily accessible drag and drop block coding.

The Hazel Problem is an early experiment in that direction.

I wanted to see how fun it might be to code the behavior of a single tree and watch it grow into a small, self-sustaining forest.

In this prototype, you’ll manage your hazel tree’s glucose production, deciding how much to invest in green mass, brown mass, and fruit. The goal is the same as all life: survive and reproduce.
It uses an early version of the Hiveforge block-coding engine, built to test how far simple logic systems can go in simulating life.

Video Tutorial

The block coding and photosynthesis simulation aren't the most intuitive at the moment, so I made a video to help new players.
